Could Jose Mourinho be about to make a shock move to Manchester United? Well, according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Portuguese coach is mulling over the possibility after United made contact with his agent.

The deposed Premier League champions are searching for a new manager after sacking David Moyes this morning and it seems they are wasting no time in trying to find the right man for the job.

Moyes was dismissed after a disastrous first season in charge since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson which has seen them go from winning the title by 11 points to sitting seventh in the table and missing out on qualifying for the Champions League.

A number of names have been put forward as potential replacements but Sky Italia journalist Di Marzio claims that United’s ‘priority’ is Mourinho and the Chelsea boss is supposedly considering his future after the Red Devils made contact with his agent, Jorge Mendes, to hold tentative talks about him moving to Old Trafford this summer.

It would be a sensational move if it were to happen as Mourinho is currently about to finish his first season since returning to Chelsea for a second stint in the hot-seat at Stamford BridgE, and he’s set to lead the Blues into a Champions League semi-final tonight against Atletico Madrid while they are also still in with a shout of winning the Premier League title this season.

However, while Chelsea have still been a success on the pitch, Mourinho hasn’t seemed himself this year and has showed signs of frustration at times, claiming he doesn’t have a squad capable of winning the title and has made several outbursts towards match officials when things don’t go his way.

This doesn’t necessarily mean he’s agitating for a move away from Chelsea, but he has made clear his desire to take charge of Man Utd in the past while the clubs hierarchy are expected to make sizeable funds available for the new boss to rebuild the squad with, so you do wonder whether he might be tempted to take over after Moyes’ pitiful attempts at replacing the great Sir Alex.

Personally, I would still be HUGELY surprised if Mourinho did end up leaving Chelsea for United after just one season. It would have been far easier for him to go to Old Trafford last summer as he’d managed Inter Milan and Real Madrid since leaving Stamford Bridge the first time in 2007. But to jump ship for a direct rival would see him become a hate figure at Chelsea and possibly un-do all the good work he’s done over his two stints as boss.

So if it’s not going to be Mourinho, who will replace Moyes this summer?

Di Marzio suggests that Jurgen Klopp, Luis Van Gaal and Carlo Ancelotti are also on United’s short-list but they would have to wait until at least 2015 to land Klopp after he ruled himself out of the running this morning, and it may prove difficult to prise Ancelotti away from the Bernabeu if they manage to win the La Liga title or the Champions League this season.

This would appear to leave the door open to van Gaal as the Dutchman would be available to start this summer, should they be unsuccessful in landing Mourinho.
