The mathematician like other scientists faces at times with either small numbers or larger number. They have, therefore, tried to device some means of shortening the writing of some of the numbers.
For instance:

1 988 000 000

Written in this form the figures are many. We can actually shorten it by writing each number between 1 and 9, then multiply it by powers of 10.

See how it could be done.
Example:
1 988 000 000 = 1988 x 106
= 1.988 x 1000 x 106
= 1.988 x 103 x 106
= 1.988 x 109

Therefore, the standard form of 1 988 000 000 = 1.988 x 109

Expressing Numbers as Powers of Ten

Numbers such as 1000, 100 000, 1 000 000 000 are expressed as powers of 10

For example:
1000 = 103
100 000 = 105
1 000 000 000 = 109

Numbers can be expressed as a product of two terms one of which is a power of 10
Example:
30 000 = 2 x 10 000 = 2 x 104
8 000 = 8 x 1000 = 8 x 103
9500000 = 9.5 x 1000000 = 9.5 x 106

These shows that the numbers 30 000, 8 000 and 9 500 000 have been expressed as the product of two terms.
